Northern Ireland’s public transport operator Translink has reached a milestone, with over 2 million customers now using contactless payments on Metro and Ulsterbus services according to a Fleet Publications report.

The adoption of tap & go technology aims to simplify travel, reduce boarding times, and improve passenger satisfaction.

The payment system allows users to travel with a contactless card or device, including smartphones and smartwatches, and can be used for friends or family members on the same journey. Translink highlighted that the service is also attracting international users, with journeys recorded from over 170 countries including Brazil, Australia, and Canada.

The technology has complemented other customer-focused initiatives such as a £4 (€4.70) daily fare cap for unlimited journeys, year-round late-night services, and the introduction of almost 250 zero-emission buses, which together enhance both convenience and environmental performance.

Translink confirmed that contactless payments are becoming standard for everyday transactions and are helping customers complete journeys more efficiently. The operator also noted that passengers benefit from modern buses equipped with free Wi-Fi and USB charging points, and that the technology enables operational teams to manage flow and service delivery more effectively.

The company emphasised that the contactless milestone supports broader goals of improving the customer experience while maintaining value for passengers. It also provides insights into travel patterns, informing future service enhancements.

Translink leadership acknowledged that ongoing uptake reflects a wider shift in consumer behaviour, as customers increasingly expect fast, flexible, and frictionless journeys.

The initiative underlines the strategic role of digital solutions in public transport and demonstrates how user-friendly payment platforms can support both operational efficiency and sustainable travel objectives.
