TAPP, a Holywood, Co. Down NFC hardware and software platform, has completed more than 50 pilot projects across the Northern Irish hospitality and events sector and is seeking to raise £800,000 in a pre-seed funding round ahead of a planned official launch later in 2026; this is a pre-launch funding announcement, not a transaction, and no deal consideration or counterparty arises.
TAPP was founded in Holywood, Co. Down by Callan Peden and Dermot McAteer in 2024. The platform enables instant access to a business's digital content via NFC tap rather than QR code scanning, combining proprietary hardware and software across hospitality, accommodation and events verticals. Current pilot clients include Dirty Duck Alehouse in Holywood, Ballyness Resort and Three Sheets, Belfast. The company employs five interns from Queen's University Belfast and is supported by Go Succeed, Northern Ireland's business support service. Revenue and EBITDA are not disclosed. The £800,000 pre-seed target is fully uncommitted. Advisors: none mentioned.
The structural driver is a QR code fatigue dynamic building since 2022. QR codes were adopted at scale during the pandemic as a hygiene measure but generate persistent friction: they require camera activation and produce no interaction data by default. Over 90% of flagship smartphones globally now support NFC natively, making the hardware barrier to tap-first consumer applications effectively eliminated.
TAPP is entering the market at the point where the smartphone installed base is ready but QR code alternatives have not yet standardised. The global smart contactless menus market was valued at $1.5 billion in 2024, forecast to reach $5 billion by 2032 at a 20% CAGR.
The CTO's stated ambition to extend TAPP into logistics and regulated supply chain asset tracking is the more consequential long-term signal. NFC-based asset verification at field level, generating an auditable read trail, is established technology in pharmaceutical serialisation and luxury goods authentication. Building a consumer hospitality use case first generates hardware deployment experience and unit economics before a higher-complexity enterprise pivot.
For Northern Ireland's startup ecosystem, TAPP's 50-pilot validation ahead of formal launch is disciplined market-entry sequencing, prioritising commercial traction over premature scaling, and the Go Succeed mentorship model is visibly functioning as intended.
