US-based global commerce technology firm Shift4 has launched Shift4 One, an all-in-one handheld device combining payments, dynamic currency conversion and tax-free shopping into a single solution for international retailers, according to Investing News Network.

The device, which launched first in the UK, Ireland, Spain and Germany, automatically detects transactions eligible for currency conversion and tax-free refunds, removing the need for multiple vendor systems and eliminating manual paperwork for both merchants and international shoppers. Shift4 One is targeting expansion across 15 European countries by the end of the year.

The tax-free shopping functionality is powered by Global Blue, the world's leading tax-free shopping provider, which was acquired by Shift4. Shift4 One represents the first jointly developed product from the two companies, combining Shift4's payments expertise with Global Blue's specialist knowledge of international shopping and tax refund processing across European retail markets.

Merchants using automatic eligibility detection typically record twice the tax-free transaction volume compared with businesses without the capability, driving additional revenue while improving customer satisfaction at the point of sale. The device is built specifically for small and medium-sized businesses serving international customers, delivering an integrated, secure checkout process that simplifies operations and reduces vendor complexity for retailers managing cross-border transactions.

When an international customer is detected, Shift4 One immediately offers to process the transaction in the shopper's home currency at a locked exchange rate, then calculates and automates the tax refund on the spot, removing the cumbersome manual paperwork and waiting times that have historically complicated the tax-free shopping process for both merchants and travellers.
