Arden Energy, the Dublin-based electric utility provider, has launched an Intelligent Data Management System (IDMS) in collaboration with the North West Regional College (NWRC) and InterTradeIreland’s Innovation Boost programme. The system automates billing, reporting, and integrates customer and staff portals to streamline operations.

The 18-month cross-border project enabled the development of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to connect the IDMS with existing platforms such as SAGE, eliminating spreadsheet reliance and enabling automated invoicing. By leveraging smart meter data, customers gain real-time visibility of energy consumption, improving transparency and control over costs.

The customer portal allows businesses to track usage, manage consumption, and access simplified reports, helping reduce electricity expenses by up to 20% without any upfront investment. Internal teams benefit from reduced manual processing, faster reporting, and consolidated insights across multiple operational functions.

The project exemplifies effective collaboration between industry and academia. NWRC’s technical team provided robotics and automation expertise, while Arden Energy contributed operational knowledge. InterTradeIreland’s Innovation Boost programme facilitated the partnership, offering guidance and support throughout the system’s design and implementation.

Project Manager Mark O’Neill was instrumental in translating technical requirements into a practical, scalable solution. The IDMS also supports decision-making by providing actionable analytics to identify cost-saving opportunities and optimise internal workflows.

InterTradeIreland emphasised the significance of cross-border collaboration in fostering innovation, noting that projects like this strengthen operational efficiency while delivering tangible customer benefits.
